40 years ago, the musical journey I had started three weeks earlier came to life on a day like today. A story that began when, upon recommendation of the teacher, my parents decided to buy my first small accordion.
It was around late September of 1982 when I went to Andraka with my grandfather. There, while I was in the car, I heard Rufino and my dad talking in front of the bar. Rufino ended their chat saying “Wait until the St. Francis’ festivities are over and come whenever you want”. My first class was going to be about two weeks later, and to be able to practice at home what I had learned in class, Rufino lent me a rather old accordion with questionable bellows. Although I had already been playing the accordion for about five years, I was eager to start with the small accordion. Not even a month in, I got into my dad´s van, also known as the “2 caballos” (2 horsepower) to go to Andraka to pick up Rufino first, and towards Zarautz, to get a new accordion. I was sitting in the back, happy, but suddenly the first setback happened while waiting at a traffic light; we were hit by the car behind us! My nervousness started showing, the fear of not being able to get to our destination made the 13 year-old boy cry. A few moments later, happiness! Back on track again! The truth is I do not remember much more, just Rufino and dad talking.
On our way back I did not stop playing my new accordion, I remember Rufino pointing at me with his finger and saying: “there you go, this one is going to work out!”.
From that moment on, I would keep my accordion forever, a weekly trip to Andraka, memorizing what I learnt at Rufino’s and coming home right after to practice what I had learnt at class. Soon after, the first performances came unexpectedly. A 13-year-old, playing with the older generations, Kepa amongst them, who would later become my companion. First, St. Marcus’s festivities in Gatika, and soon after those, St. Peter’s in Mungia, oxtail stew day in Urduliz, St. James’ in Gorliz, St. Ignatius’ day in Sestao, Virgin Mary’s in Gorliz, St. Lawrence’s in Jatabe (photos), St. Bartholomew’s in Gatika, Bilbao’s Great Week, the neighborhood of La Cuesta in Zierbena, local festivities in Larrrabasterra, and the unforgettable day of the adult musicians in Iurreta the first sunday of October, connecting with the past of our music, stuck forever in my brain.
And since then? A long journey filled with experiences!
That´s 40/04! 40 years immersed in the world of the small accordion, surrounded by 4 generations.
All of that will be shown here, with 40 songs combined together with events, travel companions and endless stories.
